West China School of Stomatology (WCSS)，Sichuan University, formerly known as the Dental School of West China Union University (WCUU), was founded in 1917.It is the origin of modern dental education, scientific research and oral diseases treatment center in China. In 1921, the first doctor of stomatology in China graduated from WCUU. It started enrolling foreign students in 1929. The graduates were granted a doctoral degree in dental science by WCUU and the State University of New York (SUNY) in 1934. In 1946, the first international academic journal of stomatology in China had been edited and published in both Chinese and English by WCUU. " The School is authorized to confer Master’s degrees in 1978, and doctoral degrees in 1981. In 1987 WCSS became the first batch of key disciplines in the country and became the National Postdoctoral Station of Stomatology and the appointed institution for employing distinguished professors of the “Yangtze River Scholars Award Program” of the Ministry of Education. It is the national key construction disciplines of“211 Project” and “985 Project” and have been ranked first in the discipline of stomatology of Ministry of Education for the past 20 years.
WCSS has a high reputation for high-quality personnel training, high-level scientific research, and superb treatment technology. It has made outstanding contributions to the development of Chinese stomatology. At present, WCSS has two national key disciplines, they are clinical stomatology and basic oral medicine. Both of them are master's and doctoral degrees conferring spots. WCSS has the unique state key laboratory of oral diseases in China (SKLOD). Our school actively carried out teaching reform and won the national teaching achievement awards for the past five consecutive sessions; Faculties from WCSS are editors in chief of many college planning textbooks and teaching reference books. WCSS has a third-grade class-A affiliated dental hospital which is also the National Standardized Training Base for Resident Doctors and a National Demonstration Center for Experimental Stomatology Education. WCSS also attaches great importance to international exchange and send our excellent graduate students to study aboard. The school has succeeded in graduating the largest number of competent stomatological professionals in China.
